Montana Fishing Report — Week of October 8, 2026
Chilly, foggy mornings and hungry fish — fall is dialed in across Montana. Here’s the latest from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and northwest Montana shops, date-stamped so you know what’s current. Kokanee snagging at the Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir stays open through October 31.

Canyon Ferry: The walleye bite has really picked up on the south end. Troll bottom bouncers with pink spinners and a worm harness in 10 to 15 feet around Ponds 1 and 2 and between the river mouth and Pond 4. Pink and gold crankbaits are working as well. A few walleyes north and south of Goose Bay. Rainbows are coming on walleye gear, lures, or cowbells throughout the reservoir, with the south end best. Occasional perch for walleye anglers.
Hauser: Rainbow action has been good near the shorelines at the Causeway and Spokane Creek on streamer or leech-pattern flies. Trolling crankbaits or cowbells with wedding rings is producing a few trout near York Bridge and Black Sandy. Nice walleye near Dana Point and across from Black Sandy on perch-colored jigs tipped with crawlers, or slip bobbers and leeches.
Holter: Rainbow fishing continues to be great, especially on the lower end while trolling almost anything shiny. Look for good numbers near Black Beach, Split Rock, the Oxbow Bend, and just above Holter Dam. Fly fishing between the Gates of the Mountains and Hauser Dam with streamers or leech patterns has been popular. A few walleye and perch inside the Canyon, near Sleeping Giant, Cottonwood Creek, and the Clay Banks while jigging in 25 to 40 feet. Kokanee near the dam has slowed down.
Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir: Kokanee snagging has been going well, and anglers are seeing larger fish this year. Season opened September 1 and runs through October 31. Limits: 35 salmon daily / 70 in possession.
Northwest Montana (local to Troy country)
Kootenai River (Linehan Outfitting report dated October 6, 2026, carried by Montana Outdoor on October 8): Holding steady in great fall form. Libby Dam has dropped releases to about 4,000 cfs, expected to hold through the end of the month and likely into November — excellent wading access. Water temps below the dam around 55 degrees; fish keyed on midges, baetis, caddis, and terrestrials. Classic autumn weather: chilly foggy mornings, sunny days in the 70s. Still a single-dry-fly game — size 12 Chubbies, stimulators, and water walkers are fooling fish; if they refuse the big stuff, drop to a #16 purple or parachute Adams, with a perdigon dropper (Uke’s brown bug) as a reliable trailer. Little reason to nymph unless you want a deep bucket. For one quality fish, swing streamers — meat-stick season is here.
USGS gauge 12301933 (Kootenai River below Libby Dam): most recent instantaneous discharge 4,260 cfs at 7:00 AM MDT on October 8, 2026 (provisional). USGS statistics for October 8 put that between the 25th percentile (4,100 cfs) and the median (6,410 cfs) for the date.
Flathead Lake, Noxon, Bull Lake, and Lake Koocanusa: no newer published shop roundup found for October 1–8. Last Flathead-area multi-water report on Montana Outdoor was Chancy’s Fish Camp as of September 25. Ask at the counter for the latest local intel — fall whitefish contests and mid-October pile-ups are on the horizon.
Elsewhere worth a look
Missouri River below Holter (compiled report dated October 3, 2026, drawing on The Trout Shop’s October 2 update): Flows about 3,100–3,110 cfs; water 59 degrees at the dam — under 60 for the first time this fall. Clear, weeds thinning. Size-18 mayfly patterns beginning to produce; adult Blue-Winged Olives expected later in October. Sows and worms remain staples; streamers over flats and buckets in low light. No FWP restriction on the Missouri.
Fort Peck (Don Wilkins weekly report dated October 1, 2026, via Montana Outdoor October 2): Pike very good over shallow weed beds with spoons or topwater; trolling crankbaits in 15–35 feet also picking up nice fish. Smallmouth biting most of the day in 20–30 feet on 1/4-ounce jigs and minnows or slip bobbers and minnows. Lake trout still deep in places (100–140 feet) and starting to move shallower toward spawn areas. Salmon in the bays; snagging season started October 1 — give FWP egg-take crews room if you see them working.
Bighorn River (Bighorn Angler, October 1, 2026): Flows bumped to about 1,800 cfs; bite a bit more technical as fish adjust. Touch of green water on the upper three miles — early turnover signal. Morning nymphing with heavy sowbugs, scuds, and carpet bugs; streamer bite picking up (Rusty Trombones, Goldies, Thin Mints, small buggers).
Madison River (Trout Stalkers / guide Danny Eiden via Montana Outdoor, October 1 report published October 4): Fall baetis, midges, and caddis on the surface; streamers good-to-great depending on the day. Water thin — Hebgen releasing about 665 cfs; river readings around 753 cfs at Kirby, 872 at Cameron, and 801 at Ennis as of October 1. Below Varney is bony for boats.
