Montana Fishing Report — Week of October 1, 2026

Published On: October 1, 2026

Fall is settling in across Montana: cooler water, hungry trout, and kokanee snagging still on the table through the end of the month. Here’s the latest from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and northwest Montana shops — date-stamped so you know what’s current.

Helena-area reservoirs (FWP)

Canyon Ferry: The north end and mid-reservoir have slowed for walleye, while the south end is clearing up and fishing pretty good. Troll bottom bouncers with silver, white, or purple spinners and a worm harness in 10–15 feet around Ponds 2–3 and the river mouth. Fire tiger or perch-colored crankbaits are also producing. Rainbows are coming on walleye gear, lures, or cowbells throughout the reservoir, with the south end best. Occasional rainbows or walleye from shore near the Silos, Duck Creek, or Hellgate.

Hauser: Good numbers of rainbows cruising the shorelines near the Causeway; shore anglers are connecting with a bobber and crawler or leech-pattern flies. Boat anglers are doing well fly fishing near Spokane Creek with streamers or leech flies. Walleye action has been good inside the Causeway Arm, near Dana Point, and across from Black Sandy — perch-colored jigs tipped with crawlers, or slip bobbers and leeches.

Holter: Rainbow action continues strong through most of the reservoir. Trolling dodgers or cowbells with a wooly bugger or crawler is working; silver Rapalas, spoons, and spinners are also putting trout in the boat. Look for big rainbows near Black Beach, Split Rock, the Oxbow Bend, and just above Holter Dam. Fly fishing between the Gates of the Mountains and Hauser Dam with leech patterns has been popular. Nice perch showing up jigging crawlers or slip bobbers and leeches along weed beds in the Canyon, near Sleeping Giant, and Cottonwood Creek — most in 25–40 feet. Kokanee near the dam has slowed. A few walleye along the Clay Banks on jigging Rapalas.

Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir: Kokanee snagging is going well, with larger fish this year. Season opened Sept. 1 and runs through October 31. Limits: 35 salmon daily / 70 in possession.

Northwest Montana (local to Troy country)

Kootenai River (Linehan Outfitting, Troy — report dated Sept. 16, 2026 via Montana Outdoor): Fishing exceptionally well on cooler temps and partly cloudy skies. Dry flies still leading — big bugs, or downsize to a #16 purple/yellow Haze, tiny ant, X-caddis, or brown perdigon dropper. Streamers for bigger fish. Flows around 6,500 cfs, water near 55°F.

Flathead & surrounding waters (Chancy’s Fish Camp report as of Sept. 25, 2026 via Montana Outdoor):

Flathead Lake — Whitefish deep in the delta (55–75′), plus Cedar & Shelter Island; lake trout on tube jigs & swimbaits at 120–150′ near Woods Bay and Painted Rocks to Cedar Island (spawn push builds Halloween–Thanksgiving).Flathead River — Cooler water turning trout on; small spinners, spoons, or dry flies. Check regs.Lake Mary Ronan — Perch waking at 25–35′ (White Rock Bay, Camp Tuffit); salmon staging around 12–15″.Graves Creek & Tobacco — Snagging season still paying out.Hungry Horse — Nice cutts on small gold/copper spoons trolled slow.Church & Fennon Sloughs — Pike on dead bait or big jerkbaits.Bitterroot Lake — Salmon trolling 50–60′; ramps low but usable.Noxon — Bass, pike, and walleye on the bite (Martin Creek / islands).Whitefish Lake — Small lakers off the points at 50–80′; pike in the bays.Dickey Lake — Jigging for salmon up to ~14″.

Fall whitefish contests and mid-October pile-ups are on the horizon — worth asking at the counter for local intel.
