Troy & NW Montana Hunting Report (Region 1) — Week of October 15, 2026
Whether you’re grabbing orange for a youth hunter, topping off shells before the last archery days, or just swinging through Troy for coffee and a regs check, here’s the straight scoop for the third week of October 2026.
Bottom line: Youth deer-only weekend is today and tomorrow (Oct. 15–16). Archery deer and elk close Sunday, Oct. 18 (about three days left). Pheasant has been open since Oct. 10, Pacific Flyway ducks and geese since Oct. 3, and general rifle deer/elk still waits until Saturday, Oct. 24. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks has not published a fresh weekly “what’s killing” field bulletin this week. The best official big-game intel remains FWP’s 2026 Hunting Forecasts (Outdoor Wire reprint of the Region 1 release dated early September; Flathead Beacon coverage Sept. 8), plus dated season pages and the Roosters for Recruitment release board (updated Oct. 14). We date every claim and stick to what primary sources actually said.
Where the seasons sit today (Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026)Per FWP’s hunting seasons page, deer species page, youth hunting page, and migratory bird page (checked Oct. 15):
Deer & elk archery: Sept. 5 – Oct. 18 (open now; closes Sunday). Youth deer only: Oct. 15–16 (open now). Ages 10–15 with the usual license/mentor rules; deer only — elk is prohibited. Deer & elk general rifle: Oct. 24 – Nov. 29. Muzzleloader: Dec. 12–20. Black bear fall (through Nov. 29) and wolf general (through March 15, 2027): open. Mountain lion: archery through Oct. 18; fall without dogs Oct. 24 – Nov. 29. Mountain grouse: open since Sept. 1 (through Jan. 1, 2027). Pheasant: open Oct. 10 – Jan. 1, 2027. Nonresidents on public land or FWP access-program land (including Block Management) can’t start until Oct. 20. Pacific Flyway ducks (including mergansers), coots & geese: Oct. 3 – Jan. 15 (open; check the 2026 migratory bird booklet for species and bag details). Mourning dove: through Oct. 30.Always double-check your hunting district in the Hunt Planner or the regs. Shoulder seasons, permits, and private-land-only tags can change the picture.
Youth deer weekend: what matters from TroyFWP’s youth page confirms the statewide 2-day youth deer hunt runs Oct. 15–16 (timed with teachers’ convention / no-school days for most public-school kids). It’s open to legally licensed 12–15-year-olds who finished hunter education and hunt with a non-hunting adult 18+, and to properly certified apprentice hunters 10–15 with a non-hunting mentor 21+. All regular district regulations apply. Orange, tag, and CWD rules still matter if your kid’s tag sits in a mandatory-testing zone.
If you’re heading out this morning from Troy, pack layers: NWS Missoula’s Troy forecast (updated about 2:00 a.m. MDT Oct. 15) calls for patchy frost and fog early, then sunny near 67°F, with similar sunny-to-mostly-sunny days through the weekend and overnight lows in the mid-30s.
Region 1 outlook: still the Aug./early-Sept. forecastNo new Region 1 survey numbers since last week. FWP’s Northwest Montana Big Game Forecast (Outdoor Wire reprint Sept. 2; Flathead Beacon Sept. 8) still credits three mild winters plus heavy wolf and mountain lion harvest for good fawn and calf survival.
Whitetails — still the strongest R1 story. Spring recruitment ran 29 to 54 fawns per 100 adults. Buck harvest has been stable to increasing for four years, and biologists expect more mature bucks (3-plus years) on the landscape.
Elk — Clark Fork drainage (Thompson Falls to Noxon) averaged 32 calves per 100 cows, pointing to a moderately increasing herd. Lost Trail (HD 103) looked stable to slightly increasing (414 elk on a ground survey; calf classification was hard in big groups). The Bob Marshall improved to 27 calves per 100 cows but remains at low numbers. Regionwide, expect elk similar to slightly better than last year.
Mule deer and moose — 41 fawns per 100 adults in HD 103 (Fisher River) and 39 in HD 101 (Galton Range), with buck numbers expected about like last season. Region 1 mule deer remain antlered-bucks-only (an antler at least 4 inches). North Fisher (HD 103-50) needs a permit plus CWD testing; HD 101 needs a permit for bucks in the last half of the season. Moose are stable but below historic highs; HD 111 (Tally Lake) licenses dropped from 10 to 8 for 2026.
Rule reminders that will save you a ticket Elk: Flathead Beacon (Sept. 8) reports that under rules the Fish & Wildlife Commission set in December 2025, antlerless elk are not legal to harvest in Region 1, and all Region 1 Elk B licenses are private-land-only. Read your district’s exact language before you squeeze. Deer: per FWP’s 2026 regs highlights, residents are capped at three deer licenses per license year, and many mule deer B licenses are private-land-only. CWD testing is mandatory for animals taken on a Deer B 199-20 (Libby CWD zone) or 170-20 (Kalispell zone), and for Deer Permit 103-50. Elsewhere it’s free and voluntary. Bring the head unfrozen with 2–4 inches of neck, plus GPS coordinates. Libby CWD sampling station: south end of Libby, Highway 2 mile marker 35 (voluntary stop). Once rifle season opens, the four weekend check stations (Hwy 2 west of Kalispell, Hwy 83 north of Swan Lake, Hwy 200 west end of Thompson Falls, Hwy 93 near Olney) are mandatory stops. Birds this week: pheasant stocking updated Oct. 14 Pheasant open since Oct. 10. FWP’s Roosters for Recruitment board (updated Oct. 14) shows Region 1 releases so far: North Shore WMA — 283 birds; Foys Bend FCA — 236 birds (limited hunting via drawing). Wild birds: FWP’s Aug. 31 Upland Game Bird Forecast still calls Region 1 a down year — cool, wet spring weather hurt brood production; mountain grouse expected below normal. Pheasant/partridge habitat here is already limited (Flathead Valley / Ninepipe). Nontribal hunters on the Flathead Reservation need a reservation upland license. Ducks and geese open since Oct. 3. You need HIP, a migratory bird license, and a federal duck stamp if 16+. We found no published NW Montana field report this week, so we won’t invent bag results. Bears, Commission, and access notesFall remains an active bear window. FWP’s Oct. 6 “Stay safe in bear country” bulletin still stands after the Oct. 1 Trego-area close-range grizzly kill (FWP via Montana Outdoor / Flathead Beacon, Oct. 2). Carry spray where you hunt and keep it on your belt while quartering.
The Fish and Wildlife Commission met Wednesday, Oct. 14 (Zoom). Grizzly bear relocation sites — including Cabinet-Yaak listings — were on the agenda for final action (FWP PI sheet). As of this morning we have not seen a published post-meeting vote summary, and FWP’s packet says the final approved release-site list is slated to be available starting in 2027. We’ll update Hap’nings when an official outcome posts.
SPP Block Management (Region 1): FWP announced that SPP Montana lands formerly under one access area are now three BMAs — Ashley Lake, McGinnis, and North — each with its own season-long hang tag (Missoulian community notice). Confirm the map and hang tag for the exact BMA before you go.
Weather, roads & fire Weather (Troy): NWS Missoula (updated about 2:00 a.m. MDT Oct. 15) — sunny near 67 today after early frost/fog; Friday near 72; Saturday near 69 with afternoon SW gusts up to about 25 mph; Sunday near 64. Overnight lows mostly mid-30s. Roads (Kootenai NF alerts, checked Oct. 15): Spar Lake Rd #384 still closed to motor vehicles (open to foot/bike past the Whoopie Creek area closure). Ross Creek Cedars Rd #398 closed to motor vehicles after the Dec. 2025 flood. Lower Quartz Creek Rd #601 near Libby closed for salvage. Deep Creek Rd #368 (Fortine) closed for culvert work since Sept. 24. Skillet Fire area reduced to a road/culvert-repair closure. Watch timber harvest traffic and attractant-storage rules in bear country. Fire / BMA: Fall open-burning rules may apply in Lincoln County outside the Libby control area, but that does not green-light campfires or ATV use on every BMA. Check mtfireinfo.org, FWP’s current restrictions map, and Region 1 Block Management PDFs before you trailer the quad. What we’d hunt from Troy this week Youth deer today and tomorrow — the statewide 2-day opener is the headline; keep adults non-hunting and stick to deer-only rules. Finish archery strong on whitetails — R1’s best forecast, and only a few days left (ends Oct. 18). Elk on public land — numbers look okay to slightly better, but know the Region 1 antlerless and Elk B rules cold. Pheasant if you’ll drive to North Shore WMA (or drawn Foys Bend), or ducks closer to home. Rifle prep for Oct. 24 — walk access, check road closures, confirm SPP hang tags if that’s your plan, and line up CWD sampling if you hold a 199-20, 170-20, or 103-50. Bear and wolf if that’s your program — seasons are open; carry spray and follow 2026 reporting rules.
